Areas that can be well treated by liposuction include the abdomen, flanks, buttocks, thighs, knees, neck, face and some other parts of the body.

Removing body fat using suction has proven to be a safe and effective alternative to surgery that can result in a better body contour with minimal scarring. The procedure gives the most effective result when used to remove localized areas of unwanted fat after someone has reached a desirable weight through diet and exercise. The best results can be achieved in younger people who have good skin tone; however, many older people may have excellent results if they recognize the limitations of the surgery and have realistic expectations. Sometimes a minor secondary procedure is necessary to achieve desired results.

    Liposuction Procedure

Except for removing very small amounts of fat, this procedure must be performed under general anesthesia. The procedure continues from one to four hours. For smaller cases it can be done on an outpatient basis. When large amounts of fat are planned to be removed, due to safety reasons you may stay overnight at our partner clinic under the care of nursing staff.

Initially the doctor will mark areas for liposuction on your body. Before the surgeon begins the liposuction, the area to be suctioned is infused with large quantities of a special fluid. This is called the tumescent technique. It has been in widespread use for many years and is a great advance to classic liposuction. It makes it easier for the surgeon to remove the fat and there is less bleeding and postoperative bruising and pain. Patients recover faster and are back to their normal activities sooner compared to the older technique.

A small, 2-5 mm incision is made near the area where the fat is to be removed. A thin, blunt-tipped, hollow rod is inserted under the skin and carefully manipulated through the fat tissue. The hollow rod is attached to a high-vacuum hose that sucks out the unwanted fat cells. When the desired fat is removed, the incisions are closed and dressings are applied. The length of the procedure varies depending on how much fat is removed and it takes from 1 to 4 hours.

Compression garments must be worn to produce smooth, even results. They need to be used for up to 4 weeks following the surgery. You are allowed to take the garments off for brief periods of time to shower. Usually results are obvious right away, but over the following 8-12 weeks there will be continuous improvement as the swelling diminishes.

    After Liposuction

After the procedure, oral medication will usually control the pain. Patients should drink plenty of fluids during the first few days after surgery. Sport drinks containing electrolytes are recommended. Patients can return to almost normal daily activity in about one week, but it may be several weeks before strenuous exercise can be resumed.

As in any operation, complications can occur but their degree and number are relatively small. Occasionally, antibiotics are required for minor infections. The most common problem is waviness or sagging skin, which is caused by irregular fat removal or inadequate skin shrinkage over the newly contoured areas. In some cases, there may be depressions from too much fat removal. Cellulite (dimpling) and other surface irregularities that were present before surgery will still be present afterward.

  • Frequently Asked Questions about Liposuction:

Liposuction is a procedure during which excess subcutaneous fat is removed, making the body lines smoother and reducing the unwanted volume.
Liposuction, as any other plastic surgery, may be performed for a patient with realistic expectations, who is in good health.
No special arrangements for this surgery are necessary; the patient gets a blood test, which is prescribed by the plastic surgeon during the consultation. However, if any dietary products have been used, the patient should stop the consumption on those.
Depending on surgery extent and localisation, there may be local, intravenous, general, or spinal anaesthesia applied.
Minor incisions are made in preliminary marked spots during the operation. Those spots are then injected by a special liquid mixture. Afterwards, the excess of subcutaneous fat is removed in feathery strokes via the same incisions by using special cannula and a pump.
The duration of the surgery depends on the extent of the surgery and the amount of body fat to be sucked out. To put it in numbers, liposuction may last from one to several hours.
Liposuction alone is a low-risk surgery, it is important, however, to reasonably assess the amount of subcutaneous fat to be sucked out, also, not to carry out several big surgeries at one time.
No, there are limitations. Most common areas of liposuction are the abdomen, waist, inner- and outer thighs, inner surfaces of knees, upper arms, shoulders, pubis and chin.
Liposuction surgery complications are very rare but nevertheless possible, namely: infection, bleeding, skin lesions, nerve injuries (usually get back to normal in several months). If there is too much fat sucked out, some body contour irregularities may occur.
The removed fat cells will not regenerate. The human body, however, is apt to accumulate fat, hence, it will generate in other areas.
The cost of liposuction surgery depends on the extent of surgery and ranges from € 250 to € 600 per area. Additionally, under the laws of the Republic of Lithuania, surgery indications only being of aesthetic nature, they are taxable with Value Added Tax (VAT) (21 per cent of the surgery price is added to the final cost of surgery).
If the operation is bigger in volume, the postoperative period may get quite painful, hence analgesic consumption is prescribed.
It usually requires one week for patients to return to work.
The final results are visible in two months after the surgery when the swellings fade away.
Yes, of course, special compression clothing must be worn after the surgery for four weeks to improve skin shrinkage.
Micro scars (from 3 to 4 mm in size) remain after liposuction; however, over time, they become hardly noticeable.
No, liposuction is not applied for obesity treatment. It is recommended to treat obesity with diet and exercise.
During abdominoplasty, the excess abdomen tissues are removed, whilst when abdomen liposuction is performed, only fat cells are sucked out. For that reason, sometimes liposuction alone does not provide the desired aesthetic result.
Maximum amount of fat to be suctioned is capped to six litres.
By performing classic liposuction, results are visible in two months, while with laser-assisted surgery – only in half a year. Not to mention, that bigger amount of fat may be removed surgically than in laser-assisted liposuction. However, the latter leaves no postoperative micro scars.
